GPS recomendations
What GPS units would be good for a newbie? I was looking around and can't find any yet in stores. Looked in Radio Shack, ABC warehouse even Dick's sporting goods(had some but no one around). So where would I get a hold of one?
How's the Garmin eTrex H?

Re: GPS recomendations
I got the Magellan Explorist GC. It is an entry level GPS made specifically for Geocaching. I got mine at Best Buy for 200$ at 18 months same as cache. Wildwonz got his for 75$ on Craigslist from a guy in Ann Arbor.
It has it's issues but I'm sure all entry level GPS do. I also have a Garmin Nuvi 255WT which I use for navigation. Right now they are on sale big time at Best Buy for 140$.

Re: GPS recomendations
Bass Pro has a great selection of handheld gps' and the people behind the counter are quite knowledgable about what they are selling! I personally own and love my Oregon 200 by Garmin.

Remember, he is a newbie. The $90 Etrex H would be fine as a starter.

Re: GPS recomendations
I'd have to agree the Magellan Explorist is pretty sweet and at a decent price. I don't know if it's worth dropping $90 on the Etrex if you can get a good deal on an Explorist. If you think you'll get more serious into caching, I would make a somewhat large investment, because it will pay off in the end. I purchased my Garmin Oregon brand new from Buy.com for about $100 off retail price. I've also been able to score some sweet deals on gadgets at Amazon from time to time.
I do recommend going to Bass Pro Shops to check out units because they do have a nice variety of units on display, and RustyNail is correct, the people behind the counter are VERY knowledgeable. I went there first to play with all of the GPS units before making my decision. It's great to be able to play with them first before investing and finding out it's not quite what you wanted.
Good luck!

Re: GPS recomendations
I mite check out Bass Pro Shop...I seen a couple at Gander Mountain today....they had the gps Jr(lil green one) for $80 and had a idk but I think the one up from the eTrex H(don't rember the name, lil bigger green) for $200. It was funny I took a look at the jr one first. The guy said "it'll get u from your truck to ur treestand" I looked at him and said "it says it's for geocaching, and that what I do is geocach" he gave me a look like whatever kid.....needless to say I don't think I'll be going back there. I'm hoping when I say "geocaching" the guys at Bass Pro will know what I'm talking about.

Re: GPS recomendations
The people at Bass have actually hosted geocaching training events, so they SHOULD know what it is.

Re: GPS recomendations
I have the Magellan GC and seem to like it. It is $200 and can be used completely paperless. The only thing that I know it will not do is the wherigo caches.

I agree with Cheech. The Etrex H, Hc or HcX would be great. You can get them for 100 bucks or less.
