I volunteered to help CAAGD at this library event , hosting a NWOGEO table to help inform the public about local geocaching, our group, impact on the environment, fun of the sport, kids swag…you know, passion for the outdoors, lipstick  and the normal stuff…as most of you know, I am not so adept at that techno stuff (heck, I still can’t do the math!)…
so discussing units is out of my comfort level…
Hence, my humble appeal today for help getting the necessary and varied geocaching points of view across to all the New Bloods coming in. They will need your guidance…
As GEOCACHING.COM is expanding its efforts at advertising to advance this sport, the local impact can be embraced or not, but it is still advancing …

Each library location in the Lucas County system will have it’s own cache published soon, and I understand from Dave, that a national media publication is covering this event for a special interest story…
Locally Bass Pro Shops is helping with the library raffle prizes both at the event and for the library month contest…

CAAGD is THE techno dude for the entire library system - working on m&e nights...contact him to affirm his long term dedication for our sport...
Insuring that NWOGEO is given the proper exposure…help me please, however you can…
Library to host geocaching event

In celebration of both National Library Week and the 10th anniversary of Geocaching, the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is excited to announce a unique opportunity for Geocachers to seek treasure throughout their local public library system.

Never before has an American or international public library placed multiple Geocaches on the shelves as cataloged items, and in as many as 18 branch locations, according to information gather from Groundspeak, an international organization for Geocaching.

According to Geocaching.com, the official global GPS (Global Positioning System) cache hunt site, Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, and share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment. The group Groundspeak coordinates Geocaching membership.

Geocaching began 10 years ago in 2000 when a man named Dave Ulmer placed the very first Geocache (then referred to as Geostash). Most Geocaches contain swag, or items

placed inside Geocaches for finders to take and replace with items of equal value for the next finder. There are more than 1 million Geocaches hidden worldwide today.

The idea of placing multiple Geocaches in the library as cataloged items was fostered from Library committee members studying unique ways to observe National Library Week, April 11-17. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance presented by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.

"This is a great family activity and we hope patrons will enjoy discovering these unique treasures on our shelves," said Library Youth Services Coordinator Nancy Eames.

Below are the fun activities scheduled for Geocaching:

Treasure Hunt @ Your Library (April 12-30) – Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. Find a geocache hidden in any Toledo-Lucas County Public Library before April 30 and be entered in a contest to win a handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) unit. A Letterboxing option is also available. Visit your library for details. Geocache prizes provided by our generous sponsors, The Library Legacy Foundation and Bass Pro Shops.
Geocaching – What's That?? Saturday, April 10, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Huntington Room/Main Library, 325 Michigan St. (All ages welcome) – Geocaching, which celebrates its 10-year anniversary in April, is a high-tech game of treasure-hunting played using a GPS device. Plus, it's a great family activity. This program will feature a Skype interview with a well-known geocache expert, Andy "Head Hard Hat" Smith, an introduction to the game and alternative ways to participate such as Letterboxing. The program will conclude with an actual treasure hunt. Raffle prizes provided by The Library Legacy Foundation include both a child's and adult's GPS unit.
Log on to toledolibrary.org for other fun National Library Week activities throughout the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library system, including a Meijer Bike Give-Away contest.
