Important 2009 "Boat Required Picnic II" Info!

Post by GizmoGuy411 »

Info updated 09/05/09, 08:00 [hr]

Here is some important information to assist "Boat Required Picnic II" participants.
The information was compiled and reorganized in part from various posts from our original event in 2008.[hr]

The following image shows three routes to the Woodtick Peninsula/North Cape beach:

The northern most route from the "Halfway Creek Boat Access" DNR ramp in Michigan is ~2.5 miles. See the alternate north route to avoid rough water in the image that follows this one. They are the primary routes for human powered craft and power craft that require little draft.

The middle route from Jolly Roger Sailing Club(launch permission is required) is ~2.6 miles. 4961 Edgewater Dr. Toledo, OH 43611, 419-729-4971.
N41 43.616 W83 27.974

The southern most route from Cullin Park in Toledo is ~4.4 miles. Larger craft that require more draft should use this route.
Please keep very far to the right (east) when traveling through the cut at the end of Cullen Point and Grassy Island!

This following image shows the previous plus an alternative route from the DNR ramp to Woodtick, plus a fuel stop route.

The north most route is ~ 3.1 miles from the Halfway Greek, Erie MI DNR Ramp to the Woodtick Peninsula/North Cape event picnic area. This route is through normally very calm waters and may be worth the extra distance.

The shorter middle route is ~ 2.5 miles, and crosses the much rougher waters of the mouth of the Ottawa River, the channel to Lake Erie, and the more open waters not protected by land. Boat traffic changes the conditions here within minutes, even when the wind and waves do not.

Lastly, the 1.3 mile southern route from the Lost Peninsula Marina fuel stop is shown, as the fuel stop usually has a port-a-potty and a soda vending machine. Note this crosses the same rougher waters as the above route.

Departure point: "Halfway Creek Boat Access" DNR ramp at the end of Algonquin St, off Summit St in Erie Michigan.(for human powered and power boats that do not require much draft)

Destination: Boat Required Picnic II - An Event cache by OnD'Hunt, schwnman99 and Gizmoguy411 at the Woodtick/North Cape beach.

Next is an image of the Lost Peninsula Marina fuel stop at
N 41° 44.380', W 83° 27.296'.

Although this is a private facility, the fuel stop is available to the public by water. They usually have a port-a-potty, and soda vending machine available. Since the fuel stop is not always manned, try calling ahead to 734-723-7466 from 9a - 6p.

It is ~1.3 miles from the "Boat Required Picnic II" event area. Although the distance is short, the water can be a bit rough for human powered craft, as the route is not protected by land, and it crosses the channel to Ottawa River.

von Sweinigus' will not be in Geneva as planned and arrives back on the red eye on Saturday morning. He would like to attend but needs a ride for him and me to the islands and back. Any chance we could join someone?
