Found this while caching yesterday

Post by Handyman-N-Fam »

Can anyone help me identify what it is?

Image
I found it in the vicinity of GC282JF, and it appears to be made of either lead or aluminum. The round part is about the size of a half dollar.
The only letters on it are "THE MASON DIS". It is obvious that there are letters/words missing.

I have no idea what it is, and was wondering if anyone on here had any idea. I initially thought of a Mason jar, but have no idea if that is right or not.

The Mason Distillery in Sausalito Calif. makers of medicinal alcohol. Maybe an old cap?

The outside diameter appears to be the same size as a Mason jar. I guess it is made out of zinc.
Thanks for the help!

Looks like The Mason Distillery was wrong.
It appears to be a Mason jar fruit jar closure. More specifically, THE MASON DISK PROTECTOR CAP. I can't read all of the writing in this ebay pic, but it does have the date of 1880.

The one in the picture recently sold for $169.

Yours would have been worth in complete condition, with the decoration on it.

Yeah, I figured that the one I found might be worth a couple of bucks. That is just because of the cost of zinc.
I still think it is a cool find, even if it is relatively worthless. :D

Yours may be worth more due to the gold content of the wedding ring in the photo.

This looks like a better fit. Nice research.
