Should we move the Web Site to another server

Post by Mighty_Mo »

Jason has suggested it might be a good idea, so ......

Should we authorize Jason and Gizmo to proceed with moving the site to a hosting company that they deem appropriate for our use?
(This would of course also authorize them to spend the money. We have enough money currently to cover a number of years at the rates Gizmo estimated)

I don't see any reason why not to do this.

I think it's time to. Unless Jason has other feelings about it... We have the $$$, and it might relieve the webmasters of one more headache.

Yes. Gizmo and Jason would still be the go-to guys. The servers would just sit in a different building and be maintained by the hosts.

As long as the funding is available, I really don't see why those who do not administer the site should be involved.

I have seen this debate get ugly in the past elsewhere. "The students need a say in what networking hardware is in their dorm's rack!", "I don't like the name of that server!", etc.

I money was not involved, and if we had a most substantial Steering Comittee, then I would agree that we should just make a unilateral decision. However in this case I think we need the blessing of the some members to proceed.

Although I do agree that we do not need to ask the general NWOGEO members to vote on where we would move the site to.

We voted "yes" to a new server.
We're been a little disappointed with our waiter anyway.

Added a yes to the count. This is a smart move overall. It will take the pressures off Jason if something goes awry, and both Jason and GG can still take care of the server! Go for it.

As a lowly user and not a sysadmin, I say go for what makes life easiest for those who keep us up and running. :)

I'm not sure we need to keep this open any longer. Even I voted yes...

It's kinda interesting - I've hosted the site on hardware I own for what, 8 years now? And this is the first outage of any significant length I've ever had.

As I told GG and for complete transparency, I will point the DNS at the new server. I am going to maintain control of the domain name. I will only transfer the domain to a legal entity NWOGEO forms, not any other individual.

I think we can close the pole, and you guys choose a hosting site that meets our needs and allows you to easily maintain it. Cacher Girl or myself can get you the bucks to get it started. Maybe we can get a two or three year deal, or would you rather just do one year and see how it goes at that site?

Since the duration was announced at the M&E as 14 days, I am hesitant in closing it at this point, We have had 11 additional votes since I checked Tuesday evening and would like to let everyone have their say. At the point as the new vote numbers decrease I see no problem closing it.

That said I think it is very close to a foregone conclusion that it will pass and the work to line up a specific hosting company can start. (i.e.) Jason and Gizmo can agree.
