I'd like to see Reed City sometime. I read a book that dealt with what happened to, I think it was 4 towns, that were rail centers, and the dcline after both lines pulled out. Reed City was one of them. Have fun!

We found "Beverly" last Friday, so I think that cache is now our oldest find :)

On June 29th, the allenite Clan found GC12 in Oregon while making our way up to GW8.

If you really like your state's oldest cache, do this:

Anyone know the story on this cache?

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_de ... spx?wp=GC6

GC6

It is the oldest active cache showing on GC, however the most recent log is from 2005, and mentioned that it was archived.

Curious that it is not showing as being archived now.

Weird.
However, this cache owner appears inactive on geocaching.com.
Hasn't logged onto his account since July 8, 2010.
Obviously not involved with geocaching.

Must be that it's older than Archiving, it's Locked. Try to view all logs.

Not involved anymore anyway. Although he IS the inventor of geocaching. He reappeared in the GC.com forums this past summer for a short while after a LONG absence.

Geocaching.com is going through some changes on how archived and locked caches are displayed. In rolling back a change implementation, somehow the notation that a locked cache had been archived is now missing. This only affects locked caches.

While I am here I will answer personally. My oldest find is Beverly, like so many others who have posted. But my lowest GC Code find is GCD, in Washington State's Cascade range, which I found this summer after attending GeoWoodstock. 2000 feet of elevation gain in less than two hours of hiking!

GCD was hidden in June 2000 vs. Beverly in May 2000. The reason why the codes are out of order is because Jeremy assigned the first batch of GC Codes by State rather than by Date Hidden when he set up the initial Geocaching.com database in September 2000.

I've been planning a trip to the Cinci area to grab up some of Ohio's older caches, including Shawnee Lookout Cache, Ohio's oldest active cache. Will actually do it this fall sometime, some of those places look pretty brushy. Google Earth helps with creating a plan of attack.

Wow! In all the discussions about GC numbers in GC.COM forums I somehow have never run across this particular tidbit. Of course, I don't notice all geocaches in the field either.

Thanks Keystone.

Mina told us this morning it would be funny to pretend we didn't know who Mr. Ulmer is. I was wondering why she was snickering at us when we left for work. Bad dog!

We found GC39 "The Spot" on Saturday. It was hidden on May 26,2000. Making it the 4th oldest in the US, and 5th oldest in the world. There is something about those old ones...they are almost always spectacular.
