Well, it happened again. Fort Wayne this time.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Police closed Parnell Avenue between E. California Road (just north of Coliseum) and N. Clinton Street for around an hour on Monday after getting a call about a suspicious object.

According to an officer on the scene, a landscape crew at Applebee’s found a suspicious object in a tree close to the restaurant. A team of hazardous technicians were called out to investigate.

“There were questions to the validity of the item, so we performed a couple actions to open it up and now we’re in the middle of checking it out and seeing if any further investigation is needed or anything that we can get off of the device,” said Jeff Foust, an Allen County bomb technician and detective on the scene.

There was a controlled explosion by officials.

“That’s one of the tools that we use, it’s just a water-charged, it’s essentially a modified shotgun. It just opens up the package or the device,” said Foust.

Officials said they don’t know much about the package, and it could take up to six months before test results come back.

“Just a cylinder that’s about roughly six inches long is the only thing we have right now. It was wrapped with tape. So, we have a little bit of speculation on our end, but that’s exactly what it is is speculation. We’ll take all that back, and then what we’ll do is we’ll have our lab look for any fingerprints or any type of remainder of whatever is left of the device, so it’ll be shipped off and investigated further.”” said Foust.

Foust said the Allen County bomb technician team usually receives between 100 to 120 calls a year.

“We usually have a request for between 100 and 120 calls. We cover eleven counties in Indiana, so we get pretty busy.”
