Lordy Lordy, the fifth digit is upon us

Post by TheMoopAlong »

So, whilst we were all getting fat on Holiday ham and turkey, the waypoints on Gc.com cycled through to GC + five digits. Check your newest in Ohio to see a few of them. They apparently start with GC10000 and go up.

My question is, anyone try to load this into your GPS yet? How about anyone who uses the four codes plus the last four?

I haven't loaded a new PQ yet, but with the (%drop2-%diff1a%ter1a) thing I already have my max waypoint character setting on 12 so I don't think it should interfer since it would now use 10 characters.

Then my predictions were off by over two weeks! I think I predicted it would happen around Jan 15th.

Curiously, a lot of waypoints are either not yet approved or not used, including the two most interesting:

GCZZZZ

and

GC10000

I know, you've got a travel bug there!

ZZZZ and 10000 we both "reserved" by GC.com. It seems some dorks were wasting numbers to try to be the one to grab those. Those few ruined it for everyone since now those will probably never be caches.

The first 5 digit cache has been published and it looks "Gnarly".

Also Thot's Utility which I use for new cache notification at work has took a dump because of this.

We were speculating about the possibilty of that happenning last summer! I guess were not the only ones that thought about it. GC should have their IP addresses... hummm.

Maybe GC could auction them off, or award them to someone for something.

Just loaded them into my 76C without any problems via the Garmin Mapsource program. GSAK also seems to handle them ok. Cachemate in the PDa is ok with it too, but remember to change the waypoint name max characters if you need to.
