2007 Daylight Savings Time - New dates issues

Post by GizmoGuy411 »

In compliance with the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the rules for the start and end of Daylight Savings Time will change beginning in 2007, adding one month to DST, by starting 3 weeks earlier and ending 1 week later.

"Spring Ahead" - DST will start at 2am on the 2nd Sunday in March. (ie, 03/11/2007)
"Fall Back" - DST will end at 2am on the 1st Sunday in November. (ie, 11/04/2007)

Your GPSr device may suffer from this rule change if firmware updates do not become available for your model, and it has automatic DST.

Some models may have an option to turn off automatic DST, allowing you to change your time manually.

Of course this issue extends to virtually every electronic device that maintains time and has an automatic DST function.

Microsoft has announced that updates will be available for "supported" operating systems. Since most of us use XP, we will be "supported" via Windows Update, as long as you have installed Service Pack 2 (SP2). If you only have SP1, you can download SP2, or request a free CD with SP2 to update your system.

As far as everything else, goes, firmware updates may or may not be available.

Some obvious and not so obvious devices to be considered are: Clocks, watches, home appliances, answering machines, phones, phone systems, Caller ID units, fax machines, TVs, lawn sprinkler systems, VCRs, DVDs, DVRs, satellite receivers, routers, PDAs, MP3 & similar players, plus automotive and other vehicle clocks, and computers.

Some devices like many of our GPSr units and readily available "Atomic Clocks" get their time from a central time server. Such devices will probably adapt to the new DST without an issue.

After a couple of email exchanges with Linksys, they acknowledged that their engineering department is looking into the issue, and to expect a firmware upate in the future.

An email reply from Garmin has confirmed that their GPS units will not require a firmware upgrade, as the new DST info will be sent via satellite.

Our NWOGEO online calendar has now been updated to reflect the new DST start/stop dates.

So if you are concerned about any of your devices, you may want to start to inquire regarding possible solutions, before March!

Does this affect the 33 1/3 RPM turntables, or just the 78's?

I set my alarm for 3:30am everyday and get up on time most of the time-well today I woke up about 10 min late and looked at my husbands alarm clock which read 4:39am man I never flew out of bed so fast in my life!! I thought I was going to be late for work so I flew around and got up bobpants and started out to the truck only to find I was an hour early MAN did my hubby hear it at work!! he works third at the same job!! he laughs at me I wasn't amused

I've updated my original message in this thread with the following:
After a couple of email exchanges with Linksys, they acknowledged that their engineering department is looking into the issue, and to expect a firmware upate in the future.

An email to Garmin has yet to be answered.

Despite the email from Garmin in my previous message that stated, that no firmware change would be necessary, low and behold the most recent firmware has a fix for the new DST dates!

So regardless of what GPSr model you have, you should check to see if new firmware is available for your unit.
