For example, a 60Cx with the SiRF III chipset locked onto the satellites much faster than the 60C. Many folks getting an "x" model were surprised to get a satellite lock while inside their houses.
GizmoGuy411 wrote:As far as I know, both models use the same GPS chip set. So you would expect them to have similar satellite acquisition times.
Of course! I was not even paying attention to the fact that the model he mentioned was not one of the Sirf III GPS chipset models. I must have been confusing the "S" with the "x"! Actually that should have been my very first point. I'll revise my post above and add that fact to the list!

And yes... I get a signal lock inside many structures, whereas my old eMap would not even get a sig lock in my vehicle, unless it was on the dash, or had an external antenna attached!

Hi all:

Ok, I'm getting the itch to update to the SiRF III club. I currently have a 76C. Although it is a good unit, side-by-side comparisons to a 60Cx SiRF III set make it look pretty bad, especially under heavy tree cover.

Since the SiRF III has been on the market for a while, is there any lower models other than the 76 or 60 that is now using this chip? I have seen several less expensive models with the "x" desination, which used to mean that it has the SiRF III chip.

I'm having a problem with the Garmin site, as they no longer specify which units have the SiRF III other than the "x" designation(I think). They list all their units now as "high sensitivity receivers".

So, are the ones labeled with the "x" designation still the only ones with the SiRF III chipset?

Well as all too often happens, the answer is not as simple as we would like.

First off, don't itch too much to join the SiRF III club. They lost a major patent infringement lawsuit with Broadcom last year, and it looks like Garmin and other GPS unit manufacturers have left them like rats leaving a sinking ship.

Garmin has flirted with at least a couple other "high sensitivity" GPS chip manufacturers, including the ST Tesco chipset and the MediaTek (MTK) chipset.

After reviewing the Garmin site, I was starting to assume that any unit with an "x" designation used the SiRF III chipset, and other units featuring ""high sensitivity" used one of the other chipsets. However after a little more research, I read that the eTrex H series uses the MediaTek chipset, and the RINO 530 HCx also uses a non SiRF III chipset.

So it is very possible that previous models that used the SiRF III chipset, may now be using an alternative. The fact that Garmin no longer mentions "SiRF III", tends to imply that.

Usually I will edit a post a million times to fix my errors and to improve the info.

This time I am just going to tell you to ignore everything I just posted above between the first sentence and the horizontal line above, and simply visit the following link to get the best answer I have read to date on this subject!

Just released!

Garmin MapSource City Navigator North America NT DVD 2010 (technically 2010.1)

Estimated ship date: 2009-04-28

Or instread, purchase this:

Garmin's "nüMaps Lifetime™ North America" is a lifetime map software subscription program, providing map updates as often as every 3 months for the lifetime of the GPS unit.

(My copy of CN NA NT 2010 is downloading via nüMaps, as I type this!)

Are you sure it's 2010? GPSCity's site has been saying that 2009 was being released in late April.

I've got CN 2006 (pre NT) and have been thinking about upgrading. My understanding is that I'd need to repurchase the softare, since the current upgrades only work with the NT version.

If I went the subscription route, can I download a new version of CN (DVD .ISO?) and then update from there? IMWTK

I just updated a City Select NA v7(2005) with a City Navigator NA 2009 DVD. You have to specify the non-NT DVD when ordering. I have a 76C.

Here is a link to GPSCITY that says they will have the CN NA NT 2010 on DVD. LINK: http://www.gpscity.com/item-garmin-numa ... sa10nt.htm

The version I downloaded last night actually shows in MapSource as "2010.1", which I assumes means the first update available for 2010. Now I wonder when next three updates will become available.

As you said, I'm pretty sure you will need to have an NT version already, before you can subscribe to the updates, just as I had to buy a full NT version last year, since they would not let me update to an NT version from a non NT version.

The file download was not an ISO. It was actually an EXE named, "Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010C.exe".

So it looks like your best option at this point would be to buy a CN NA NT 2010 DVD, and then later buy the subscription. If you find a better option to migrate to the subscription from a non NT version, be sure to let us know!

Also for those reading this, please be aware, as in Stump75's case, you CAN NOT use a NT version unless you have a GPS model that can support NT.

That is indeed true. But are you now saying that I will not be able to update the maps anymore because my GPS will not support NT? The updates(as of a month ago) were still available for the non-NT software.

No, I am saying that people with GPS models that do not support NT version map software, are stuck with buying updates each time they are available, and can not opt for the - "nüMaps Lifetime™ subscription service and pay just once for all furture updates for the life of their GPS unit.

So there is another reason for you to move up to an "x" model or Colorado or Oregon!

OK, I have the 60Cx and currently have the non-NT version loaded. But if I understand correctly I do not update my vesrion with this Lifetime deal, but do a full upload of a new NT version of maps at the posted price and then get "lifetime" updates every 3 months or so.

I also understand "lifetime" to be the lifetime of this particular GPSr I have in my hand. If I upgrade GPSr's I start all over with a new lifetime subscription fee. How am I doing so far?

As long as all the 60Cx's(even the early ones) support NT. Do they?

As I understand it yes. Assuming of course the firmware has been updated too.

I think the breakdown is every "x" model, plus any newer models that support CN mapping.

Anyone wanna call Garmin and try to get this all confirmed?
