Garmin GPSMAP60Cx/60CSx/76Cx/76CSx info & discussion
Post updated: 08/04/10(Post Subject fka "Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx Roll call")

The information in this post is updated periodically. Since not all date sensitive information in this post is updated with each edit, check the dates on the individual items below to see when they were last checked. Please note that the term "Personal Navigation Device" or PND, is used here in favor of "GPS unit" or"GPS radio or receiver".

While parts of this post may apply to other PNDs, it applies primarily to the Garmin handheld "GPSMAP" family of 60CSx, 60Cx, 76CSx, and 76Cx models that use the SiRFstarIII GPS navigation chipset. Garmin also employs several other "High Sensitivity" GPS chipsets from other manufactures such as the ST Tesco and the MediaTek (MTK). As of the last update to this post, these GPSMAP series PNDs all still used the superior SiRFstarIII chipset.
- Readhere why SiRFstarIII is so superior.
- Readhere at GPSPassion.com about the other "High Sensitivity" chipsets that Garmin is using.

1) FIRMWARE
a) Firmware Components:

- These PND (Personal Navigation Device) models have two internal updateable firmware components. Unfortunately, each firmware component is identified differently by Garmin between their website and within the actual PNDs.
Image Navigate to this screen on your PND via
Main Menu > Setup > System > press Menu, then Software Version
To create screenshots from your PND, use Garmin's freexImage program.

Note that this sample screen shot may not reflect the latest versions available!

* The "s" was added to the version number after 11/12/07, however the software does not appear to be changed.
The "s" may be a chipset identifier, indicating that the software is for the SiRFstarIII chipset. Details here.

Both firmwares may be updated via Garmin'sWeb Updaterprogram.

The Unit Software may also be downloaded via the links below. On occasion, the firmware versions available through the links below have not match the versions available through the Web Updater program. Check via both methods if you want the latest.

As Garmin's website has evolved, the GPS Nav Chipset firmware was removed from the above "Unit Specific" pages in favor of it being available only via the Web Updater. The exception is the Forerunner 305 page which as of 08/04/09, still showed it available for download. Also as of the last update of this post, the firmware was the same as used by the above PND models..

b) Firmware Issues:

With Version 2.60, several people had experiencing bugs. I have witnessed the following:
- Zoom function freezes. Changing screens away from, then back to Maps, allows zooming to work again.
- Current position stops updating on map. Other data continues to update properly. Unit must be powered down and back up to clear the issue. Other forums mention that this may be related to changing screens when navigating with the compass on. (As of version 3.30, this issue still occurred. "jslagle" suggests that it may due to the unit attempting to recalculate a route.)

• Firmware 2.60 corrected an undocumented problem that prevented data from being streamed via USB. It affected any program that required real time data, including Garmin's own "nRoute."

2) HIDDEN PND FUNCTIONS

• While at the Trip Computer screen, press the rocker Up, Right, Down, and Left in that sequence to enter the Diagnostics page with Shutdown and Stack logs.Press MENU while in Shutdown to delete logs or to Reset Stack Stats while in Stack logs. Each press of FIND, displays all possible graphics. Each press of IN displays all possible error messages. Pressing MARK displays the "Poor Satellite Reception" pop-up.
• With unit off, press and hold the ENTER button while powering on to see a test screen. Among other details, there is a temperature reading available. Each press of PAGE cycles through several display tests.
• With unit off, press and hold ENTER and PAGE while powering on to perform a master reset. (Function confirmed by Cheech Gang.)

• How to Get Map Source legally for free. Map Source comes packaged on disc with Garmin products. Online, only the MapSource Updater for it is available, and requires MapSource to be previous installed to work. If your install disc for MapSource is not available, then visit the Garmin site and install Training Center. Next download the MapSource Updater and it should install with base maps only. Other methods exist, including the creation of a dummy mapsource.exe file in the c:/Garmin directory, before downloading and installing the MapSource Updater.

b) Other Third Party Software Applications:

• GPS based PC software that require a Serial interface to your PND can be tricked to use the USB interface with a program called GPS Gate from http://www.franson.com/gpsgate/.It can also be used to run multiple GPS based programs simultaneously, or it can simulate a GPS for testing purposes.

• ImageGSAK - Geocaching Swiss Army Knife
This is by far the most popular 3rd party program used for Geocaching! With the built in macro capability, many user created features have been created for it. On epopular macro called, "FindStatGen"by rutson and Lignumaqua, that helps you create a very detailed statistics report in HTML format for use in your Geocaching.com Profile.

• There are plenty more programs available, however for now here is a link to our NWOGEO DOWNLOADS area for other Geocaching Utilities.
4) MAPPING SOFTWARE
a) Garmin Mapping Software:

Garmin's City Navigator mapping software is needed to use the routing functions on these PND models. It is available for various regions, including North America which is often referred to as "CN NA".

An new data compression format was introduced for City Navigator North America Version 8 called "NT" (New Technology). While either the traditional or NT formats may be used in these PND models, the NT format takes less memory and it the best choice for future support.

After Version 8 of "CN NA" and "CN NA NT",Garmin changed their version naming convention. Therefore the next version was called, "City Navigator NA 2008"and "City Navigator NA NT 2008". Also starting with the 2008 version, it could only be loaded into ONEPND unit, whereas the previous maps could be loaded into two different units under the same license.

Garmin's "MapsLifetime North America" is a lifetime map software update subscription program, providing new may data as often as every 3 months for the lifetime of the one PND unit by one owner. It is available only for those with NT mapping software such as CN NA NT. Owners of non NT software, must purchase the full NT version before they can subscribe to this service. As of this post, similar programs also exist for Europe and for a combined NA/EU program. Check out Amazon, for a good price on the CN NA NT subscription.

A 2 gig MicroSD card will hold all the data from the CN NA NT software.

To load the data faster than with the USB cable, use an MicroSD to SD adaptor to load the card directly from the SD card slot of your PC using MapSource.(Note however that some computers can only READ from their card slots and cannot WRITE to them. Read more about Memory Cards below!)

b) Other Third Party Mapping Software:

• Mountain Dynamics produces various map sets with POI information called Snowranger for many North American ski resorts. (added 12/04/07)
http://www.mountaindynamics.com/en/snowranger.php
http://www.mountaindynamics.com/en/snowranger.php

• Software exists to make your own maps. More info and links are available via this link:
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topi ... C_ID=56366
5) MEMORY CARDS

• 1gb and 2gb MicroSD (aka Transflash) cards are available at very low cost.Search Amazon.com andOutPost.comfor "MicroSD" for some great buys. Do NOT buy MicroSDHC cards! SD means"Secure Digital" and SDHC means "Secure Digital High Capacity". Cards that are 4gb or higher use the HC format and are NOT compatible withGarmin "x"models!

• MicroSD cards often come packaged with an adapter that can be used in a SDcard slot in your PC. Using MapSource, data can be loaded much faster by using the card in your PC, rather than loading via the USB cable. (Note however that some computers can only READ from their card slots and can not WRITE to them.)

• A problem with "x" models reading MicroSD version 2 cards was corrected with "Unit Software" version 3.20.

• You may navigate via two methods to view your current memory usage.

OR
From the Main Menu navigate to Setup > Interface > Press MENU > then Card Info

7) PRECAUTIONS:

a) Do NOT buy Garmin Mapping software from a eBay or similar auction if you want to be able to upgrade the software later! There may also be a similar problem with hardware purchased via auctions according to some forum posts.
b) Owners of PND models with USB jacks, caution that the jacks can become wore out. This could especially be an issue if the unit connected to a car cord and is frequently taken in and out of a vehicle.
c) Owners of "x" models should be very careful that their memory chips are properly aligned in their sockets, before powering up the unit. I've misaligned my chip in a 60CSx, and it caused the backlight to burn a spot in the coating on the back of the LCD panel. Others have reported that inserting the batteries backwards can also cause this problem!

Newbie Needs Help

Post by Chipcarvey »

Greetings! I am a newbie to GPS (and geocaching). Just bought a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx and think its pretty cool so far. Is the 60CSx compatible with Delorme's Street Atlas 2006 USA? Even though Street Atlas lists GPSMAP 60Cs (no x) on their compatibility list, when I attempt to initialize my GPS in Street Atlas, I get the error message: "Can't open specified USB port." I have already installed the drivers that came with my GPS. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Newbie Needs Help

Post by GizmoGuy411 »

Welcome to our site Chipcarvey. At least three of us here own the GPSMAP 60CSx. While I do not have DeLorme software, maybe the others do. I have managed to install Garmin software that is not listed as compatible, while I wait for the correct software to arrive. While the maps work fine, the built-in routing functions do NOT work properly.

Have you tried to contact DeLorme? (Doubt that Garmin would help much.) Have you tested your GPSr with the software that came with the unit. Have you updated the firmware in your unit to the latest version? (Version 2.70 are 2.71beta are the latest)

Firmware older than 2.60 had a problem communicating with any software that required real time (steaming) data. If you are lucky, updating your firmware may fix the problem.

We have a little more info on our units here in the Tech forum. Look a the post at the top of this topic.

A quick test of your real time data via USB would be to download the free program from Garmin called nRoute. If the program fails, then the problem is probably in your GPSr firmware.

If you do talk to DeLorme, be sure to ask them which firmware version their software works with.

From what I have read in other forums, the "x" models of each of Garmin's various series are different than their sister non "x" models.

Hopefully one of our other 60CSx owners will have some other suggestions for you.

Please keep us up-to-date on your results, as we can all benefit from the info.

If you do get the software communicating, it would also be interesting to know if the internal routing works with the DeLorme software. Without the correct mapping software, my unit routes only via roads it knows in it's built-in base maps. At first I thought it just did terrible routing. After talking to other 60 and 60CSx owners, reading message threads at GoundSpeak, and finally understanding Garmin's software compatibility chart, I realized it was due to using the wrong software.

I've been saving my pennies for some time now to buy a 60CSx. Is there a recommended place of purchase?

Also, mentioned above “Pressing MARK displays the "Poor Satellite Reception" pop-up. I hear these things can pick up satellite if you’re standing in Hitler’s bunker… 8O
Keeping a signal while searching for “What Frank and Estelle Brought To Dinner would be sufficient for me.

The best price I see currently (it can change daily) is 399.99 at gpsonsalenow.com. That is a pretty good price. When the 60CS came out, it was $400 for quite some time. ( I saw the CSX last week for 379.99, same place  )

p.s. 1GB mem cards for the "X" series are at Outpost.com today for $44.99 with a $20 rebate (shipping and tax not included) Huge savings

Re: Garmin 60csx questions

Post by TheMoopAlong »

I just ordered the CX (same as CSX but no e-compass. E-compass is for ****) from gpsonsalenow.com for 349.99 + about $10 shipping. I am very happy with the performance of my CS unit currently.

1. The connection point on the "X" series is the standard mini-USB.
2. I'm a dummy on this one. I can tell you I have Mapsource installed on 2 computers, but IMO it only works on ONE GPSr unit. I wouldn't swear to anything other than 2 computers though
3. See website above. Also, outpost.com is best place for memory cards i've seen so far
4. All cables and software for your PC interface are included with purchase, however the car kit (motorcycle) is extra. That can typically be found on Ebay for a very reasonable price, mapsource included. I think I found mine for $125 for the lot (cigarette lighter cable, bean bag mount, sticky mount, cradle, mapsource CD, etc.)

I have heard nothing but praise about Garmin customer service, but mine has never needed a tune up (knock on my head).

Re: Garmin 60csx questions

Post by GizmoGuy411 »

Like TMA said, plus:

1. Not only is the port standard, Garmin keeps adding more features to use via the USB port. Their latest addition, last week was the ability to use the memory as a mass storage device. So you could store pictures or even programs on your chip via the USB port if you so desire.

2. While various mapping software will load into the 60CSx, "City Navigator" is the ONLY software that will do Routing functions properly. It can be loaded on TWO GPS units.

3. Keep shopping for prices. I've seen $360.

4. As TMA said.

5. There is a mobile kit available that has the dashboard mount and the City Nav software. Never checked to see if the kit was cheaper than buying each seperate.

Be sure to read the evolving post at the top of this topic for more info.

I've been looking primarily at the CSx for a new purchase.

TMA suggests that the e-compass sucks @$$.
Any other owners of the CSx have an opinion on the e-compass and altimeter extras compared to the Cx - which has all the goodies, except the above mentioned?

Re: Garmin 60csx questions

Post by GizmoGuy411 »

A plain old magnetic compass, you simply hold level and read. Pretty easy learning curve.

The e-compass takes some getting used to. First of all there are speed and duration adjustments in the GPSr to decide when to switch from sat to e-compass. Secondly you need to periodically calibrate the compass by spinning yourself in a circle two times. (If you think muggles think your nuts already, wait until they see you do THIS little dance!) If you go too fast or too slow, you have to keep spinning until you get it right.

jslagle calibrates his every time he powers it up. I've calibrated mine when I really think I need the e-compass function, since I get dizzy every time I calibrate it.

(I also own an wristwatch/compass, that requires the same calibrating.)

While I still carry my magnetic compass, I have adapted to the e-compass to the point I have stopped using the mag. Eventually the mag may stay home. One less thing to carry in the back-pack.

As far as accuracy, I never directly compared it against the mag. So far it has been accurate enough for geocaching at least.

Since I no longer fly or skydive, I doubt that the altimeter is going to find much use for me. There is a graph function that shows altitude over time, that is slightly entertaining to look at while driving around. It it pretty easy to pick out where the under/overpasses are.

Maybe you should arrange to cache with one of us to try out the "S" features yourself to help make the decision. It would be ashame to buy the non "S" then wish you had.

Better Idea. Why don't you use my 60CS for a trial run on the e-compass? GizmoGuy411 would have to set it up for you, I have it turned off. But, my CX should arrive tomorrow, and if I get it set up ASAP, my 60 CS will be available pending purchase (have a buyer from NWOgeo already).

That is a generous offer from TMA.

Also, I don't know if the e-compass has been improved or not since TMA bought his CS, but we could check it against my CSx and see.

(TMA.... do you have the latest firmware for your CS installed?)

I appreciate all the information and the generosity from evryone!
From what I can see on the different sites, the price difference is averaging $40 between a CSx and Cx.

My research did not include downloading and reading the operating manual for both Cx and CSx units, so I was unaware of the ability to “turn off the e-compass and revert to the sat if you didn’t want to use it (per Moops contact) on the CSx.

TMA – Thanks for your huge generosity, but if possible, I would prefer to set up a cache outing with a CSx toter in the near future for the opportunity to observe the SiRF receiver in action as well as the e-compass feature.
Besides – getting the opportunity to see another geocacher spinning around in a circle with his GPSr would be a sight for a camera!
