Geocaching.com cache page creation

Post by GizmoGuy411 »

In the process of working on the 2005 Holiday Shindig page, I discovered something that may be useful to others when creating the web page for a geocache.

You can input the entire HTML code from an editor such as Front Page into the cache creation window called "Long Description". No need to be selective.

While I was already aware that GC.com automatically edits your HTML input to remove things it does like, and add things it does, I was not aware that it would automatically remove all the head and footer code normally generated by HTML editing programs.

Knowing that makes it much easier to select the code to copy too.
1) Just use the shortcut key, Ctrl-a to select ALL the code.
Then Cut & Paste.
2) Use Ctrl-c to copy the selected code from your editor.
3) At GC.com in the "Long Description" window, simply paste the HTML in using Ctrl-v. Or if you replacing existing code at the site, then use Ctrl-a to select all the code, then Ctrl-v to paste over it entirely.

Once you have "Submitted" your code at GC.com, take a look at the altered code in the "Long Description" window. You will notice that all the un-need and un-wanted HTML tags have been automatically stripped out, and some new code, need by GC.com has been inserted.

No more selective Cut & Pasting by me!

Any recommendations on a free html code editor? I haven't played around with this stuff for years. I am looking for one that will write simple code. All I want to do is some images, fonts, colors, etc. I just don't want to go relearn html. I am trying Word right now and it pukes out the most bloated code imaginable. I don't seem to have frontpage any more, but if I remember that was pretty bloated as well.

I've used several HTML editors and have pretty much settled on Frontpage. The bloat is not nearly as bad as word. The rendered code is still readable when you switch to the code view.

Since it has been a while since I used a free HTML editor I really can't recommend any anymore.

I would however suggest looking one that has at least two view modes, wysiwyg, and code. It always helps to be able to stitch to code mode, to clean things up, or tweak things that the wysiwyg mode can't accomplish.

Take a look around http://www.download.com as a starting point.

If you want to include a picture or pictures in your log, do they have to be uploaded to the cache page or can you have them stored at a different site and have the code look for that site?

You can reference images that are on other sites.

Thanks flooder.
I was thinking of storing all my pics at my personal site for different cache page creations.
I'll have to check it out.

flooder! Good meeting you at the Meet & Eat.

I just remembered a free HTML editor that I had forgot about. It is the built-in "Composer" that comes with the Mozilla browser.
It is no Front Page, but it would get the job done what you want to accomplish.

Having a second broswer is not a bad idea anyway, and Mozilla is one of the best.

I forgot to post this here but someone pointed me to this site. It's real nice for creating small pages.
