Pocket PC

Post by Mr.BBD »

What is the "Cachemate" equivalent that people use for a pocket PC? We have a friend who is looking to go paperless and already owns a pocket PC.

We bought a palm since that was seemed to be what others were using. I have never even touched a pocket PC and am no help.

Any thoughts?

That's what we use with our pocketpc for paperless caching.

After talking to Mark (Mr. Moop) about paperless caching last night at the M and E, I've decided to go for it. Was wondering what kind of Palm PC others have and get their opinions. I don't want to spend more than $200 though. Any and all comments will be appreciated.

Thanks. KCBoom.

Are you asking about a Palm or a Pocket PC? If you are asking about a Palm/PDA then you can pick up a Palm Z22 for about $100 or a Palm Tungsten E2 for about $200. I don't know how much luck you will have in finding a pocket PC for $200 (new). The Z22 will do everything you want it to do for paperless caching so figure $100 for the Palm, $8 for cachmate and nothing for GSAK if you don't mind the nag screen after the 21 day free trial or $20 to register it. Oh and don't forget to become a premium member on geocaching.com so you can benefit from the Pocket Queries ($3/month or $30/year).

When I use my PDA, which is almost never because I foget how to fire it up and Yogi has to come over and bail me out (BTW, time for a new lesson Yogi) I use a Palm Zier which cost about $100 on line, takes SD cards for expansion, which are now dirt cheap, has MP3 player and lots of other stuff I also never use. I think quite a few of us who went paperless about the same time us a Zier.

I use a Sony Clie and does a fine job. Stop by a office supplies store and sometimes they will have great deals on close outs.

Thank you all for the input. I settled on a Palm TX Handheld. Hope it'll fit the bill. Now to figure out all the programs to get paperless. I'll be bringing it to the March M and E. Maybe someone can give me a quick lesson. Thanks again.

I know the basics about Cachemate and GSAK, if that would help.

I just got a Palm IIIex from a friend. Playing with the software(GSAK & Cachmate) now. I'll be paperless soon, I hope! It's an 8MB monochrome palm, but it looks like it will do what I need it to. And...the price was right!
