Garmin StreetPilot c530

Post by jsj444 »

My wife bought me one of these for Christmas. I've been using it to navigate about town, etc., and want to try it out for Geocaching. Anyone use this model before? It's a little balky to carry around so I thought I'd use it to navigate me from cache to cache and then use my e-trex to actually find the hunts. Does this make sense? LOL Anyway, I've been using GSAK on my e-trex for a long time and love it but if I try to download waypoints onto my StreetPilot it says it cant find the Port, although I've used it before. I have 5 USB ports on my computer 3 in back and 2 in front. I have the E-trex plugged in permanently in the back and want to use a port from the front for the StreetPilot. I guess what I'm really trying to find out is can you use more then one GPSr with GSAK at the same time, and does the StreetPilot work very well for Geocaching?
Hope this makes some sort of sense!!
Thanks for any advice.

I bought my wife a Garmin NuVi for the same purpose. It will mark a spot with coords but I haven't tried to enter coords into it. Since it's very light, it's easy to tuck into a pocket. I'll have to read the instructions one of these days and see if you can manualy (or cable )enter coords.

I use a Tom Tom to get me to a cache site on the road. It gets a little confused since it is looking for coords that are off of the road and will sometimes take to to the back side of a site that you can't get into rather than taking you to the Walmart and then to the back of it to find a skirt lifter.

As for GSAK it can export files for different styles of GPSrs. I have to export a file and then manually put it on my TOM TOM. It will not send the information to my TOM TOM.

I recently upgraded to a Nuvi 650 for work purposes and therefore use it for caching. It is not the greatest for caching, and I am still trying to work through some issues with it.

I assume you can see the GPS when you click on your My Computer. Can you save the GPX file from GSAK onto your C-drive and then just drag and drop it into your GPS? I used to have a Nuvi 350 (or close to it) and I could just drag and drop GPX files into it. It was very easy.

If you can not tell, I am just starting to work with GSAK.

Good Luck.

I use the C530 to navigate me from cache to cache and then use my GMAP76Cx to actually find the hunts . I use a macro in GASK to make cpoi. Then put sd card in my computer then use POI loader.
Put the sd card back in the C530. The C530 will hold only 500 waypoints. So when it wants to know if I want to load them to gps ram I say no. I usally have 2,000+ waypoints.
