Actually as long as I am here often enough, I just go to the list provided on the main front page that scrolls with which forums have been recently updated. I usually know what I have read and what I haven't....

Yes, but that is only a partial list if new posts. i.e Off-Topic posts aren't shown there

Yes there are some limitations, however it is the most means of looking back to the last 10 or 30 posts.

If it has been longer, then there is no easy way to look back unless you just scan each forum you are interested in.

I have scenario #1 as a "Favorite" and rather than go to the particular post I got an email for I go the the "Posts since LAST visit"

I go to post since forward, click entry, then black out all the blue ones, then read the old ones, then blue out all the red ones, put your left foot in and shake it all around, then read new ones and underline them. Upon return all is as I left it and I start all over. Your mileage may vary.
