Missed Opportunity

I have been kicking myself all afternoon. Anything like this ever happen to you?

I had to take a business trip to Japan on the 5th. My first time to Japan, first time crossing the Pacific. I had a pretty tight schedule of meetings, and since I thought the Japanese engineer acting as my guide would be visiting with family in our off time, I only fleetingly thought about the possibility of caching while overseas. Anyway, since I hadn't seen any caches listed near the places on my agenda, I wrote it off. Didn't take the GPS, didn't put any pocket queries on the Palm.

We did get a chance to do a little sightseeing late Friday afternoon. Did a little shopping and visited Nagoya Castle. Only today, this afternoon, as Watanabe and I were reviewing the places we visited on Google Earth, did I notice GCNW1V.

Over 7000 miles from home and I unknowingly passed within 100 feet of what would have been my first outside-Ohio find!

Sorry to hear you missed your long distance cache. Luckily I've always managed to get a couple of caches in while geocaching out-of-town. Usually I'm with people who are not geocachers, and it is difficult to squeeze them in. Therefore I've often missed caches that I was close to that I regret later.

Can we assume that from now on you will be taking your GPSr with you everywhere?

I was in Dallas last weekend and had 50 caches mapped out within 3 miles of our hotel. The two inexpensive shuttles which ran out of the hotel were nowhere close to accessible-by-foot caches. It would take an arm and a leg to pay for a taxi.
I was at the Hyatt Regency at DFW Airport which was surrounded by highways and access roads. The only place to jog was in the garage. No green space for miles. I got within .47 miles of a cache at a golf course, but would have had to cross two major highways.

A prime example of why some virtual & reverse caches were valuable.

Next time I might just take up my manager's offer to let me stay the weekend and do some sightseeing (caching). But with Mrs. seven months pregnant, I wasn't about to stay any longer than necessary. And I sure as heck wasn't going to fly back on Monday 9/11.

Sometimes business opportunities take you to new countries.
I soon will be back in Germany very close to the Poland border and hope to cache in both.
If you know that you are going, some AltaVista Babble Fish preparation is always good - if you don't speak the language.
You can paste the URL and have the whole page and links translated for you.
This way, you can select specific caches as desired - before you get there.

This is a great idea. I've hunted caches here I could have used the program on.
